    In preparation for our Zoom class on Tuesday, review Starlight Starbright, singing the melody and clapping the rhythm. Be ready to share when I sing “what do you wish for?”

    This week’s focus: China
    To be completed this week:
    *Read the story Ruby’s Wish this week, if you have the book. If not, here is a link to a youtube recording of it. https://youtu.be/oEQrgZ8krvE
    Discuss the following vocabulary before reading the text: terrapin, ricebirds, calligraphy, embroidery, moon cake and carp.
    Generate questions from the text as your child responds to the book or feel free to use these questions as a guideline:
    * What did the Chinese call California?
    * How did Ruby’s grandfather become wealthy?
    * What is the color of celebration in China?
    * How did Ruby’s grandfather view education that was unusual in his culture?
    * What was in the red envelope?
    On page 6 and 7 look at the artwork. What do the images depict? The items being held by Ruby also have meaning. Explore the meaning of the turtles, lotus pods, white rabbits, magnolia blossoms.
    Write a sentence about Ruby or something new you have learned about China in your adventure journal and draw a picture.

    ENRICHMENT – Extra resources for children and families who desire more

    Study the clothes, architecture, furniture and plants in China. How are they the same? How are they different?
    Look at the bonsai tree? What can you learn about it? Can you sketch one?
    Maybe look up a recipe for Asian Noodle soup to make at home this week.

    During the Week of Oct. 19, whether you are joining class on Tuesday or Friday, we will be reading the book MingLo Moves the Mountain.
    One photocopy of an adventure journal entry by Oct 31, 2020 OR a page of copywork from Writing with Ease to be submitted to Ms. Monica.
