Class Name: Grade 8/9 Literature 2

    This week’s focus: Setting

    To be completed this week:

Have as much of Huck Finn read as possible.

As we consider the setting of Huck Finn answer the following questions (with as much detail as possible) this week on blank sheet of paper that you keep in a binder, or a notebook:

    1. Where does this story happen? Consider country, landscape, all the places in between, mood, atmosphere, weather.
    2. When did this story happen? Consider the time period, seasons, era, historical events that preceded the story, the youthfulness of the characters, intellectual period. What ideas were prevalent during this time? Does the author deal with these ideas through his characters? Do the characters respond to the social rules and customs of the time?

The Art of Poetry – Chapter 3 – Symbols. Read through and complete the questions to one of your favourites poems.

In Preparation for Literature Class on Thursday October 29th.

*Bring questions previously asked about the context of Huck Finn
*Bring questions answered this week about setting of Huck Finn
*Prepare to share one finding from the Activities section of Chapter 2, Art of Poetry, whether that be metaphors you noticed in everyday speech around your home, some you created, or a poem you wrote or memorized. Your participation will be noted.

ENRICHMENT – Extra resources for children and families who desire more

Memorize the poem, The Highwayman Part 1
Complete a little research about the life of Mark Twain. Was that his real name? How did he decide on it?

    THIS MONTH’S ASSIGNMENT FOR SUBMISSION:

In the resource section you will find a reading response assignment to be completed as October’s submission, which will be due November 4th.

Reading Response Literature 2 Grade 8/9 October Submission – 10/23/2020

Options are given, depending on how far along in the book you are as well as a rubric to be aware of the marking scheme.

While the reading response assignment does not tackle some of the beliefs and themes Mark Twain was exposing, November’s submission will be more specific, addressing the struggle of conscience, freedom and sacrifice, greed and social hypocrisy. These will be explored through discussion first in the next two literature classes.

Please contact heather@atrbenefits.com with any questions and submissions.
