    This week’s focus: Wrapping up At the Back of the North Wind by George Macdonald

    In preparation for Schole support class:

    Complete your contribution to the Settings chart in the google shared document.
    Finish the book

    In paragraph form, answer the settings questions in written form. This is your assignment for November.
    Use the settings chart to support your answer.
    Each question can be answered in ONE paragraph.
    I am looking for a topic sentence and then sentences that support the topic sentence.
    Sentences can use “quotes” from the settings chart. You may use supporting quotes from any chapter listed on the settings chart.
    Please show evidence of some planning/organizing ideas/brainstorming/outlining.(hand this in too)
    Your paragraphs should be written, then “rested” for a day or two, revisited, and checked for spelling, punctuation, capitalization. Read your paragraph ALOUD. Exactly as your wrote it. LISTEN for awkward phrasing, or missing ideas.
    IF someone who has NOT read the book is given your paragraph, would it make sense to them?

    What is the mood or atmosphere of the place where the story happens? Is it cheerful and sunny, or dark and bleak,? What words, phrases, or descriptions does the author use to create this atmosphere?

    Is the setting a real or imaginary place? If Is imaginary, is it subject to the same physical laws as our world?

    To be completed this week:

    Begin reading THE YEARLING
    There are 33 chapters. This book ideally is done before Christmas. IF you read at least ONE chapter a day, you will be done “early” .
    Consider reading TWO chapters on weekdays…if you can or TWO on weekends and ONE on weekdays.

    WHEN reading—underline/highlight/tag phrases, words, sentences that jump out to you.
    I will give you a WONDER/NOTICE/MAKES ME THINK of in “chapter chunks” following this class.
    Continue to add to your commonplace book, you may add things from beyond this class.

    ENRICHMENT – Extra resources for children and families who desire more

    Look up the next book, THE YEARLING’s author and bring at least three ideas to the next class.

    THIS MONTH’S ASSIGNMENT FOR SUBMISSION:

    TWO PARAGRAPHS, one for each question as listed above.
    Recommended hand in before rest week, although by end of November is sufficient.
    Tidy cursive/handwriting is welcome. Include a scan of planning. Please write your name on each page.

    Class Name Writing & Rhetoric 7/8
    This week’s focus: Writing & Rhetoric 7 Lesson 4 and part of lesson 5
    In preparation for Schole support class: We will talk about the introductory paragraph part 2 which is the Thesis Statement! Every well written essay has an introductory paragraph. The introduction will hook the reader and state the purpose of the essay. We will start our essays with a “hook” called a Hyperbole. Remember that a hyperbole is a deliberate exaggeration for the sake of emphasizing an idea to appeal to the emotions of your audience. Then we will follow that with the main idea of the essay which is called a THESIS! Remember that the thesis doesn’t just state a fact, but instead always takes a position or expresses an opinion, and that opinion is open to debate.
    As well, this week we will go over Lesson 5 together. This is where the autobiography lesson comes in. Remember I told you that the autobiographies in this book are there to help us write our own essays? Our first essay will be on Frederick Douglass! So this lesson is a glimpse into Frederick’s life.
    To be completed before class: Lesson 4: Read pages 45 to 51 and complete Tell It Back sample outline on page 51. In class we will go over the Go Deeper section together on page 53 to 62. The point of this learning this week is to feel comfortable with Thesis statements.
    This means that after this week, we will be superstars at writing an introductory paragraph for our essays!!
    To be completed during the remainder of the week: Frederick Douglass: pages 63 to 76. Really get to know him, and start the outline for your essay.
    THIS MONTH’S ASSIGNMENT FOR SUBMISSION:
    November submission: Frederick Douglass essay OUTLINE. This means you will use what we learn about Frederick Douglass in chapter 5 and the whole encomium in chapter 6 and use that to write the OUTLINE (November submission) for the Frederick Douglass essay (December submission—please use Rubric on page 116 to see what is required in the essay).
    If you haven’t handed in your 5 Hyperboles, please do so this week. Thank you!

    Continue to have as much of Huck Finn read as possible.

    To Be Completed this Week:

    As we consider conflict this week record answers to the following questions in point form (with as much detail as possible) this week on a blank sheet of paper that you keep in a binder or notebook:
    – Fill in the blank: This story is about the protagonist (Huck) trying to ______________.
    – What is Huck attempting to overcome? Is it physical or emotional?
    – What is Huck trying to capture?
    – Give evidence supporting the compelling struggle: Is it….

    Beginning working on Art of Poetry Chapter 4 – Words. Make note of the vocabulary words you may not be familiar with in this chapter.

    *From Art of Poetry – Chapter 3 on Symbols – Activity section – question #7 I am hoping that most of you feel comfortable to do this!
    *Questions given last week on character. From our discussion we will create together a diagram that highlights his growth and development as the book progresses from the beginning to end.

    Thank you to those that added quotes to the document on the land versus the river. There is still lots of room to add more if you haven’t had a chance yet.

    ENRICHMENT:
    Is anyone memorizing The Highway Man? Or together with your family have you memorized In Flanders Field. Let’s talk about this in class
    Prepare an outline for an essay on how the river and the land are symbols of opposing worlds and what Huck gains from his experiences in both worlds by the end of the novel.
