Welcome to Literature 2; I’m looking forward to an exciting year of literary exploration together!
IN PREPARATION FOR SCHOLÉ MONDAY:
Please bring your literature journals and Frankenstein book to each class.
Read Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley: Volume 1, Chapter 1 to Chapter 4 (pg. 9-54). In your literature journal, record your first impressions of the setting and the characters as the story begins, as well as any quotes, ideas or questions that you have as you read.
In your Art of Poetry book, read Chapter 11 intro (Shaping Forms) and the Alexander Pope poem, Ode on Solitude and its analysis. Focus on the second poem in the chapter, Ode to the West Wind, by Percy Bysshe Shelley (Mary Shelley’s husband) and consider the questions on page 141.
Read the first of the Contemporary Criticism essays, “The Spark of Life”: The Science behind Frankenstein, by Jo Bath.
Research the life of Percy Bysshe Shelley and read some of his poetry. If you find a poem that you particularly like, copy it into your literature journal and consider sharing it with us next class.
