Name: Literature: Grade 2
This week’s focus: China
To be completed this week:
*Read the story Ruby’s Wish this week, if you have the book. If not, here is a link to a youtube recording of it. https://youtu.be/oEQrgZ8krvE
Discuss the following vocabulary before reading the text: terrapin, ricebirds, calligraphy, embroidery, moon cake and carp.
Generate questions from the text as your child responds to the book or feel free to use these questions as a guideline:
* What did the Chinese call California?
* How did Ruby’s grandfather become wealthy?
* What is the color of celebration in China?
* How did Ruby’s grandfather view education that was unusual in his culture?
* What was in the red envelope?
On page 6 and 7 look at the artwork. What do the images depict? The items being held by Ruby also have meaning. Explore the meaning of the turtles, lotus pods, white rabbits, magnolia blossoms.
Write a sentence about Ruby or something new you have learned about China in your adventure journal and draw a picture.
Writing with Ease – Week 5
