Class Name: Literature: Grade 1
This week’s focus: China
To be completed this week:
Retell orally the folktale Ming Lo Moves the Mountain to your mom or dad, as a folktale would usually be told. What did Ming Lo learn? What can you learn when you face obstacles? Do you use physical strength, or fear or bribery to get what you want? Or do you make logical choices and take small steps little by little. Was the wise man truly wise? Who can we go to that is all knowing, all powerful and always present?
In your adventure journal, draw a picture of the mountains in Guilin. Either write a sentence about what you learned from this folktale or copy this saying that we discussed in class at the end.
“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” – Confucius
“Sometimes it is wiser to move yourself than expect your obstacle to move”
Writing with Ease – Week 6
ENRICHMENT – Extra resources for children and families who desire more
In Chinese culture, the traditional New Year is an elaborate celebration. Look up some pictures on the internet of the fancy dragons and lions that are a big part of this tradition. How do the Chinese dress for this occasion? How many days does it last? What special foods do they eat? What colour do they decorate with?
Google how the Chinese use silkworms to make clothes.
